The History of Stone Coated Steel Roofing
Stone coated steel roofing as a lifetime roofing system has an exciting history dating back to World War II. During World War II the Germans were attacking Quonset huts, or storage facilities, on British soil. As this happened the need to rebuild quickly required that the allied forces use materials on hand, which in many cases meant using corrugated metal. The problem with this was that the shiny metal was an easy target for the German bombers. Chemists developed a tar coating to put on the metal and then covered them with sand and dirt to camouflage the buildings.
A young industrialist noticed this and carried these ideas back with him to New Zealand. He began to perfect this coating and to develop a way to apply it to metal roofing. Little did he know that, after more perfecting, it would create a lifetime roofing solution. From this maverick concept comes the stone covered steel roofing we have today. He took the very basic ideas of steel roofing and a roof made out of stone, and married the two ideas.
Over the years, many elite roofing companies around the globe have worked to create and perfect this coating and the process of taking sheets of steel and shaping them to simulate Romantic Mediterranean Clay Tile Roofing, Authentic Wood Shake Roofing and Classic Clay Tile Roofing.
